Judith Cameron

A brief biography

From girlhood on an lowa farm to the business life of a worldwide marketing executive flying a quarter of a million miles a year, Judith Cameron has looked at the world through many eyes.

From this rich past, she brings to her creations the experiences, impressions and talents of a true "Renaissance woman"—one who for two decades excelled at management, marketing, and public relations with companies in Europe, Asia and the U.S., but also as a full-time artist in Spain, designer and manufacturer of her own line of jewelry in Santa Fe and now with her pottery.

Judith's studio is high in the White Mountains of Arizona, just west of the New Mexico border. The area's pristine natural beauty, combined with Judith's memories of a more worldly life, provide the inspiration for her original pottery designs. She calls it "functional art" as every piece is an original work of art but can also be used every day.

MAKING CAMERON POTTERY
Judith explains her process

1. CREATING THE RAW POTTERY
First I make `'greenware" by pouring liquid clay (slip) into selected molds. In timed increments, I dump, wait, release, wait, remove, wait. I clean and smooth the piece then let it dry fully for several days.

2. FIRST FlRING:"Bisque Firing"
The greenware becomes white bisqueware after being fired in my kiln at about 2000°F for 8 hours, then cooling in the closed kiln for another 13 hours.

3. THE PAINTING
Now I have the bisque "canvases" on which to produce my unique paintings. First I paint 3-4 coats of base color glaze, letting each coat dry before applying the next. Choosing from a palette of over 100 different glazes, I paint the design freehand. Rich super-saturated colors distinctive of my work are achieved by painting each brush stroke over and over, 3 or 4 times for each color. When that is dry, I coat every surface with two more layers of clear, glossy glaze which adds depth to the color and strength to the piece.

5. SECOND FlRING "Glaze Firing"
I place all the pieces in the kiln, mounted on little "stilts" to keep them from touching the shelves. The cover is closed, the bung holes opened, and the firing begins in the kiln for 5 hours, then cooling for ten hours more.

6. THE MAGIC MOMENT
At last, 1 open the kiln to discover the thrilling alchemy that has taken place in that intense transforming heat. This is the most exciting moment of my day! After careful inspection and honing of the burrs on the bottom, the pieces are ready to wrap and send to the person, gallery or shop, somewhere in the world, who ordered it.

THE HANDMADE PROCESS

Every Judith Cameron creation is painted freehand. Each piece is a signed and dated one-of-a-kind original piece of art. While I strive to produce the best and most nearly perfect product every time, it is important to remember that this is a hand-made, one-at-a-time art, not a factory. Slight variations occur during the creative process. These differences may be seen as a testament to artistic flair. You will get the design you expect, yet sometimes with small differences in the design, or "oops" occurrences such as the slip of a brush, a bubble exposing the clay, a tiny spot where the glaze separated during the firing process, a slight variation in form. Each occurrence reveals the essence of the handmade process. As an aficionado of fine handmade ceramics, I hope you will value and appreciate these subtle variations.

FOR YOUR SAFETY
Judith's pottery is made with safe materials. They are food-safe and dishwasher-safe. Most pieces may be used in a microwave, but please use your common sense; the pottery should be at room temperature first, and only used for quick warming, not long cooking.

To assure that her work is safe from any bacteria that could enter the clay body of any unglazed area, Judith glazes her pottery totally, then fires it on 'stilts'. The hot liquid glaze forms little glaze 'burrs' on the bottom of each piece during the firing process. When cool, she hones them smooth.
