Nestled high in the Colorado Rockies (10,680 ft) is the historic townsite of Elkton. Elkton was established in the 1800’s for the purpose of gold mining. Now the old mining cabins have been redesigned for year-round living and the purpose of hut skiing in the winters. Thousands of skiers have enjoyed the beauty and the warmth of Elkton. With dynamic views of the Gunnison Valley, Elkton offers one of the most pristine areas for skiing, hiking, biking and relaxing.
July thru October allows the traveler to drive 10 miles north of Crested Butte to reach Elkton. Though many cars make the trip, a high clearance vehicle is recommended.
In the winter time, with a 5 mile ski, nearly 1,500 ft. elevation gain and an average annual snowfall of about 600 inches, Elkton is a backcountry skiing delight. With the average cross-country ability, the ski will take about 4 hours.
