John Friend, founder of Anusara Yoga, developed this refreshing approach to practicing the poses based on similar questions. He comments in a recent Yoga Journal article, “I look for what I find to be beautiful (in my Poses) and determine what I can do to enhance it. People come to the practice, and they start to feel the wonder of life. It (yoga practice) can be simple yet so complex in its beauty.” While this yoga is heart-oriented and spiritually inspiring it is grounded in classical hatha yoga poses.

Anusara is saying “Yes” to the whole spectrum of life. It is a willingness to be aware of all parts of ourselves. To be in the flow is to look at whatever arises with freshness and freedom. Simply and lovingly open our hearts to the present moment compassionately accepting the world and ourselves as we are.

Anusara Yoga is a uniquely integrated approach to Hath yoga in which the art of the human spirit powerfully blend with the science of biomechanics. MJ Simmons’ classes are taught to match student abilities and challenge their potential. Individual needs are honored and an opening of the heart is encouraged through the life affirming practice of Anusara Yoga. For beginners, seniors and those dealing with health issues, MJ begins with gentle modified postures that emphasize proper alignment. These nclude well-known poses such as Mountain Pose (Tadasana), downward facing dog (Adho muka savasana) and abdominal and back strengthening sequences. She encourages her students to keep a fun, playful and lighthearted attitude during class. MJ says that she teaches as she was taught, to flow with your practice and discover your true nature, the beauty within ourselves.

Fridays
2:45 to 4:00 pm - Relaxe, Restore & Heal ~ Very gentle restorative and healing poses for students with health concerns and Senior Practitioners.
(Ansura Basics & Sunrise Celebration classes will be added this summer.)
