High Altitude Gardening

September 12 - 14

High Altitude Gardening class is offered through Western State College’s Extended Studies department. Students will learn the basics of high altitude sustainable gardening methods including seed selection, propagation, establishing and maintaining a garden, harvesting and enjoying the fruits of their labor!

Students learn the basics of growing nutritious food with ecologically sound methods at high altitudes. Participants have many hands-on experiences— including exposure to the various aspects of plants— from seed selection to planting, transplanting, maintaining, harvesting, and preparing nutritious foods. Participants learn how to design and create a garden in the Rockies using tried and true methods of sheet mulching, composting, cover cropping, and natural fertilizers to enrich the soil. In the end, students are able to make educated decisions about where their food comes from and how it is produced.
