Current Conditions: Good to go!
Detailed Description:
The Caves Loop is a short non-motorized expert ride in Cement Creek. It has very steep climbs and descents, and is quite smooth. You can ride it from town on HWY 135, or start in Cement Creek. It is a good way to continue to trail 409, which is amazing since all the work on it last summer.
Ride up Cement Creek Road 740 (6 1/2 miles south of Crested Butte, left off HWY 135.) Pass Trail 409/ Caves Trail and parking area and the Cement Creek Cabins turnoff. Turn left on a flat singletrack signed with a brown user sign post, 2.3 miles up CR 740. Follow it to Walrod Gulch Road, just over 1/2 mile. (Stay left at the fork in the singletrack.)Turn left and climb Walrod Gulch Road. Turn left on Trail 418 Walrod Cutoff in 8/10's of a mile up. . Climb and contours above Cement Creek Road.
In less than two miles, the trail tops out at an intersection with Trail 409. Trail 409 is a technical ride that joins Farris Creek Road.) For the Walrod Cutoff ride continue left. There are great views along the way before you dive back down to Cement Creek Road on the steep switchbacking descent. These are in great shape due to the work of CBMBA volunteers a couple years ago. Right on the road takes you back to the highway.
Early Season and during rainy spells please take care to walk your bike over any existing muddy sections to minimize trail damage.
